Iran Says Europe Would “Lose It All” if JCPOA Sanctions Are Restarted
(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi issued a stark warning Saturday, declaring that European powers would “lose it all” if they proceed with efforts to reinstate international sanctions on Tehran through the controversial “snapback” mechanism.
Araghchi’s statement came in a post on X, responding to last month’s decision by France, Germany, and Britain to activate the process that could restore United Nations Security Council sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear agreement.
The “snapback” provision in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) permits parties to reimpose sanctions if Iran is found to be violating its nuclear commitments.
Under the 2015 JCPOA, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, with the deal signed by Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States. However, the U.S. withdrew in 2018, reinstating sanctions and prompting Tehran to reduce some of its compliance measures.
