Gaza Bleeds: Death Toll Tops 64,800 as Starvation Crisis Deepens

(MENAFN) The death toll in the Gaza Strip has climbed to 64,803 since Israel launched its genocidal campaign in October 2023, according to figures released Saturday by the Health Ministry in Gaza. The ongoing genocide continues to drive a worsening humanitarian disaster, with starvation now claiming lives alongside airstrikes and gunfire.

Over the past 24 hours, 47 additional bodies were recovered and 205 people were reported injured, pushing the total number of wounded since the genocidal campaign began to 164,264. Officials say many more casualties are believed to be trapped under rubble or in areas rescue teams cannot safely reach.

Efforts to obtain food and aid remain perilous. In the last day alone, five Palestinians were shot dead and over 26 injured by Israeli forces while attempting to access humanitarian supplies. The total number of people killed under such circumstances since May 27, when the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation started operations, has now reached 2,484, with 18,117 injured.

The famine in Gaza is also accelerating. Within 24 hours, seven more people, including two children, succumbed to starvation and malnutrition, bringing the total number of such deaths since the start of the war to 420, among them 145 children.

Since March 2, Israeli authorities have enforced a full closure of all Gaza border crossings, further restricting the flow of essential supplies and aid into the besieged territory.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a United Nations-backed hunger monitoring body, famine conditions were officially confirmed in northern Gaza in mid-August. The IPC warns the crisis is expected to expand into Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September, unless access to food and humanitarian relief significantly improves.

As conditions continue to deteriorate, rescue and aid operations remain severely limited, with many areas inaccessible due to active hostilities and infrastructure collapse.
