Over 100 Reported Dead, 146 Missing After Boat Overturned in DRC
(MENAFN) At least 107 people are confirmed dead and 146 others remain missing after a boat capsized on Thursday in northwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), local media reported on Friday.
The tragic incident took place on the Congo River, approximately 122 kilometers from Mbandaka, the capital of Equateur Province, according to official sources cited by local outlets.
While 209 survivors were rescued, many with injuries, all cargo aboard the vessel was destroyed in a fire that followed the sinking.
The cause of the disaster is still under investigation, with authorities yet to confirm any details.
Shipwrecks are unfortunately a frequent occurrence in the DRC, particularly on the Congo River, where overcrowding and poorly maintained vessels often result in such tragedies.
