Show-Cause Notice Issued To Para Over SM Post

Srinagar – Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather has served a show-cause notice to PDP MLA Waheed Para over his social media remarks alleging that the Assembly secretariat had endorsed the detention of AAP legislator Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

The notice, issued on Wednesday, directs Para to explain his position in writing or in person within seven days, failing which breach of privilege or contempt proceedings may be initiated.

The Speaker took strong exception to Para's post on X, where the Pulwama MLA termed the arrest of Malik a“shameful surrender” and claimed that the Assembly secretariat had endorsed the move.

“Waheed Para Sahib, in my opinion, is ignorant about the rules and he has lied about the issue. He will have to face the consequences under rules as he has deliberately and intentionally misled the public. We cannot allow that to happen,” Rather told PTI.

Clarifying the matter, Rather said the Speaker has no authority to approve or disapprove the arrest of any legislator.“Such arrests are made by the district magistrate. After any MLA is arrested, the district magistrate has to inform the Assembly secretariat, which in turn, under Rule 260, informs other members,” he said.
