Abdullah Barred from Meeting 'Detained' AAP Leaders in Srinagar
Srinagar- The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday strongly objected after reports surfaced that former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah was prevented from meeting AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh in Srinagar.
Singh, who had travelled to the Valley to protest against the arrest of AAP legislator Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), alleged he was placed under house arrest at a government guest house in Church Lane by the authorities. Visuals widely shared on social media showed Abdullah arriving at the guest house to express solidarity, but security personnel barred him from entering.
Senior AAP leaders claimed they were detained and prevented from holding a scheduled press conference. Singh and Delhi MLA Imran Hussain, the party's in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir, said they were confined to the Church Lane guest house, its gates locked, with no official explanation provided.
“Democracy is being murdered here. We were scheduled to address a press conference but were denied permission. We are being held without reason,” Hussain said, adding that the party intended to highlight Malik's detention, which he termed“punishment for raising the voice of his people.”
Sanjay Singh described the action as dictatorial.“Is it a crime to hold a press conference in a democracy? Is it a crime to protest the 'illegal' detention of an elected MLA?” he asked. In a statement, Singh said Abdullah's attempt to meet him was blocked by authorities, questioning the legality of such restrictions.
