Kremlin Declines to Address Poland's Drone Claims

(MENAFN) Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday declined to address accusations from Poland that Russia had launched a drone attack, stating the matter falls under the authority of the Ministry of Defense.

At a press conference in Moscow, Peskov emphasized that any official response would come directly from Russia's military leadership. "We would not like to comment on this in any way. This is not our area of expertise. This is the prerogative of the Defense Ministry," Peskov said.

When asked if Poland had sought to engage with the Kremlin following the alleged incident, Peskov stated that no such requests had been made. He added, "The EU and NATO leaders accuse Russia of provocation on a daily basis. Most of the time, without even caring to present at least some kind of argument."

Earlier on Wednesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported that approximately ten drones had been shot down over Poland the previous night, attributing them to Russia. In response, the Polish Foreign Ministry summoned Andrey Ordash, Russia’s chargé d’affaires, to express concern over what they described as the "Russian origin of the drones."

After the meeting, Ordash confirmed that Poland had not provided evidence linking the drones to Russia.

Meanwhile, Belarusian Chief of the General Staff Pavel Muraveiko stated that Belarus had notified Poland and Lithuania about approaching drones near their borders. He also noted that Poland had warned Belarus of drones originating from Ukrainian territory. Muraveiko explained that Belarusian air defenses tracked drones that deviated from their flight paths due to electronic warfare, and some of these drones were destroyed by Belarusian forces.

This is not the first such incident involving Poland. In 2022, shells fell on Polish soil near the Ukrainian border, resulting in two fatalities. Initially, Warsaw attributed the missiles to Russia, only for then-President Andrzej Duda to later clarify they were Ukrainian missiles, launched to intercept Russian projectiles.

Regarding international military involvement in Ukraine, Peskov warned that foreign troops entering Ukraine would trigger severe consequences. However, he noted that not all Western countries seem to recognize the gravity of such actions. "There are always countries that take an extremist stance, either failing or refusing to understand the terrible implications of such reckless actions. And there are other countries that much better comprehend the actual situation," Peskov remarked.
