Nepalese military takes control, removes elected PM

(MENAFN) The Nepalese military assumed control on Tuesday night after violent demonstrations over two days resulted in at least 20 deaths and the removal of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s elected government.

According to reports, soldiers were deployed nationwide to restore order as protesters damaged public property and released inmates from detention. Earlier, Army Chief Gen. Ashok Raj Sigdel urged calm and dialogue to resolve the escalating crisis. All airports in the country have been temporarily closed.

President Ramchandra Paudel has begun preparations to form a new government after accepting Oli’s resignation. The protests, which started Monday, also left nearly 350 people injured.

The unrest erupted after Oli imposed a ban on social media platforms, demanding that international companies establish offices within Nepal. This decision sparked widespread demonstrations in Kathmandu, with protesters storming government buildings, political party offices, and even the parliament, which they set ablaze.

Violence continued despite the government lifting the social media restrictions, with protesters torching residences of senior officials, including the President’s Office.
