Nepalese Army Takes Command Following Government Fall
(MENAFN) The Nepalese military assumed authority on Tuesday evening after two days of violent demonstrations that resulted in 20 fatalities and the removal of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s elected administration.
According to a news outlet, the army “is operating all over the country.”
Troops were stationed to uphold security and stability as demonstrators damaged public facilities and released detainees.
Earlier, the military chief, Gen. Ashok Raj Sigdel, appealed for restraint and negotiations to address the turmoil in the Himalayan state.
All airports have been shut down.
President Ramchandra Paudel is preparing to initiate the procedure of establishing a new cabinet after he accepted Oli’s resignation amid the deadly protests that have killed at least 20 individuals since Monday.
Nearly 350 more people were wounded during the disturbances.
