EU Calls on Russia to Put End to Ukraine War

(MENAFN) The European Union's top diplomat issued a sharp call Tuesday for Russia to halt its invasion of Ukraine and re-engage in peace negotiations, asserting that Western nations remain firmly united behind Kyiv with long-term security assurances and growing military support.

Speaking before the European Parliament during its first plenary session after the summer break, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas delivered a direct rebuke to the Kremlin: “Our message to Russia is simple: this war is not winnable. Leave the battlefield and come to the table with Ukraine.”

Kallas accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of deliberately prolonging the conflict. Putin “has zero interest in peace and will not stop the war until he is forced to,” she said.

Since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, the EU and its member states have committed nearly €169 billion in total aid to Ukraine, including over €63 billion in military assistance, according to Kallas.
“This year alone, member states will provide more than ever before, €25 billion. To date, they have delivered 80% of our target of 2 million rounds of ammunition. By October, we aim to reach 100%,” she told lawmakers.

Kallas emphasized that Kyiv’s Western allies remain strategically aligned in offering long-term security guarantees. “The West is united in providing security guarantees to Ukraine. There are now serious pledges on the table from the Coalition of the Willing,” she said.

Referencing a recent warning from Moscow, she added: “This represents a serious escalation from Russia and directly undermines European security.” Her remarks followed a Sept. 4 threat by Putin to target any Western personnel on Ukrainian soil, including peacekeepers, shortly after the coalition met in Paris.

Kallas also pressed for faster integration of Ukraine into the EU, signaling that the war-torn country has made tangible progress toward reform. “Ukraine has already made important progress on reforms despite the war. It is time to open negotiations on Cluster One,” she said.
