DAKAR - Senegal now anticipates production from the Sangomar offshore oil field to reach 34.5 million barrels in 2025, up from an earlier projection of 30.53 million, the energy ministry announced. The upgraded outlook reflects stronger-than-expected performance through August, with more than 24 million barrels already produced. Senegal elevates Sangomar output forecast for 2025 marks a significant upward adjustment for the project's full-year trajectory.

Following the start of oil extraction in June 2024, Senegal secured its status as an oil-producing nation. Woodside Energy Group of Australia operates the Sangomar field, heralding a new chapter in the country's energy landscape. Production has accelerated rapidly, aided by the reliable performance of the floating production, storage and offloading facility.

Between January and August, output exceeded 24 million barrels-about 70 per cent of the upgraded forecast-underlining the field's momentum and supporting the case for the revised projection.

The initial forecast of 30.53 million barrels was deemed“a good performance” by the energy ministry, based on data earlier this year. That projection had already built upon robust one-year production levels, including an annual figure of 16.9 million barrels in 2024 and a daily production rate above 100,000 barrels.

Despite these promising developments, challenges remain. While the FPSO platform has demonstrated reliability, sustaining high operational efficiency is essential. Additional factors-such as geopolitical risks, market volatility and infrastructure constraints-could shape prospects for sustained output growth.

Economists and policymakers will watch whether the field's performance can translate into broader economic gains. Revenue from oil sales generated nearly $950 million in 2024, boosting public resources and potentially financing domestic infrastructure and social programmes.
