Hundred get arrested for standing with Palestine Action

(MENAFN) More than 425 individuals were arrested in London on Saturday for demonstrating in support of the banned activist group Palestine Action, according to the Metropolitan Police.

The group was outlawed under the Terrorism Act in June after members broke into a military base and spray-painted two planes red in protest of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Since the ban, supporters have staged multiple demonstrations against it.

Activists gathered on Parliament Square carrying Palestinian flags and signs stating, “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.” Police detained people both standing and sitting on the lawn, including several protesters in wheelchairs. Some clashes with officers were recorded.

“In carrying out their duties today, our officers have been punched, kicked, spat on and had objects thrown at them by protesters,” Deputy Assistant Commissioner Claire Smart said.

Demonstrators remained in Parliament Square into the evening. The rally, organized by Defend Our Juries, was described by the group as “one of the biggest mass acts of civil disobedience in British history.”
