Gunman Attacks Police Station in Türkiye, Kills Two Officers
(MENAFN) An armed assault on a police station in Izmir, Türkiye, on Monday resulted in the deaths of two officers and left two others injured, local authorities confirmed.
The assailant, a 16-year-old male, opened fire using a rifle at the Salih Isgoren police station in Izmir's Balcova district.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal that the suspect was arrested following the attack.
During a speech at the launch of the 2025-2026 school year in Istanbul, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his condolences to the victims' families and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded officers. He emphasized that the suspect had been captured and stated that investigations were underway into the individual’s potential connections.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc also took to NSosyal, announcing that the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had initiated a judicial probe into the attack.
Suleyman Elban, the governor of Izmir, confirmed that the injured officers were hospitalized and noted that the assailant had been captured after sustaining injuries. Speaking to the press, Elban stated, "We are investigating the incident from multiple perspectives" and added that the suspect had no prior criminal history or arrests.
