Shark attack kills man in Australia
(MENAFN) A man was killed in a shark attack on Saturday morning off the coast of New South Wales, Australia, police confirmed.
Emergency crews were called to Long Reef Beach in Sydney shortly after 10 a.m. local time (0000 GMT), where the victim’s body and surfboard were recovered from the water. Authorities said he had sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.
"Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command have closed the beach and will liaise with experts from the Department of Primary Industries to determine the species of shark involved," the police statement said.
As a precaution, beaches along a 9-kilometer (5.5-mile) stretch have been closed until further notice. Specialists are expected to examine two pieces of the damaged surfboard to gather more information.
