What causes a total lunar eclipse?
NASA explains that as the Moon passes directly through Earth's shadow, sunlight filtering through our atmosphere will cast a reddish hue onto the Moon's surface. This natural effect, caused by the scattering of shorter blue light and the bending of longer red wavelengths, transforms the full Moon into a glowing deep red or copper colour, creating the striking visual known as the Blood Moon.
The exact shade of red depends on Earth's atmospheric conditions at the time. Dust, pollution, or volcanic particles can all affect how dark or bright the red hue appears.
Global visibility: Who can see it?
This is the second and final total lunar eclipse of 2025. It will be widely visible across the Eastern Hemisphere, including: All of Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, parts of Antarctica, and the Middle East. The Americas will miss out on this one.
According to NASA's eclipse bulletin, viewers in Asia and Western Australia will get the best and most complete view of the eclipse. Qatar, located in the heart of the Middle East, will also experience the entire sequence of phases, from the first partial shadow to the last.
How to watch the eclipse
No special equipment is needed. Lunar eclipses are entirely safe to observe with the naked eye. Unlike solar eclipses, you can look at a lunar eclipse directly without any risk. For those who want to enhance the experience, binoculars or a small telescope will allow a closer look at the Moon's surface and help bring out the rich red tones.
For the best viewing:
. Choose a location away from city lights
. Look for a clear, unobstructed view of the sky
. Charge your phone or camera – you'll want to capture this
. Check the weather forecast in advance

Do I need a telescope?
No, but it enhances detail and colour.
Is this a rare event?
Yes. Total lunar eclipses happen only a few times a year, and not every location sees every one in full.
Final note
