UN-Led Team Voices Deep Concern Over Situation Of Forcibly Displaced Gazans
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)
Gaza, Sept 3 (Petra) – The Site Management Team in the occupied Palestinian territories expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian disaster across Gaza, as ongoing Israeli military operations force hundreds of thousands of physically and psychologically exhausted civilians into displacement.
The team, which includes several UN agencies and Palestinian and international NGOs, said in a statement issued Wednesday that the August 7 announcement of intensified military operations in Gaza City has had severe humanitarian consequences, particularly for families already displaced from northern Gaza. Many families face significant obstacles preventing further movement, including high costs, the physical strain of relocation especially for the elderly and persons with disabilities and the lack of safe refuge.
The statement added that many Palestinians hesitate to move due to fear of losing the ability to return or because of exhaustion from repeated displacement. It noted that forcing hundreds of thousands southward may constitute "forced family transfers" under international law.
On August 26, a new displacement order was issued affecting roughly one square kilometer in the Al-Daraj and Sheikh Radwan neighborhoods of Gaza City, impacting an estimated 200,000 to 250,000 residents. Overall, areas subject to displacement orders or designated as military zones now cover 86.5 percent of Gaza's territory.
Since August 14, the start of intensified military operations, over 82,000 new displacements have been recorded, with 29,700 movements from north to south between August 14 and 31.
The Site Management Team urged unrestricted humanitarian access across Gaza to reach people wherever they are and called for adherence to international humanitarian law to protect civilians, humanitarian workers, and those unable or unwilling to move.
It demanded an immediate halt to attacks on displacement sites and emphasized respect for humanitarian principles, including humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence.
