France Confirms Support for Greenland’s Sovereignty

(MENAFN) French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot reiterated on Monday that Greenland is "not for sale" during a visit to the self-governing Danish territory, which continues to be the subject of territorial interest from the United States.

His comments follow heightened tensions surrounding American efforts to increase influence in the Arctic region.

Using the platform X, Barrot expressed strong opposition to any external pressure on Greenland, citing global instability and Russia's actions in Ukraine.

He emphasized, "In the face of the brutalization of the world, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and predatory temptations in the Arctic, France is clear: Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not to be taken."

This statement underscores France’s firm stance on respecting the sovereignty of the territory.

Barrot confirmed that France is set to become the "first country in the European Union" to open a diplomatic mission in Greenland in early 2026.

He also announced the creation of a joint dialogue committee aimed at deepening collaborative efforts between France and Greenland.

Stressing Greenland’s European ties, he stated, "Greenland is a European territory. One does not rebuild the greatness of a nation on the servitude of its neighbors."

This message appeared directed at nations attempting to exert influence over smaller or less powerful regions for strategic gain.

Barrot assured that Greenland and Denmark are "not alone," promising that both France and Europe would continue to offer their support "today and tomorrow."

His words reflect a broader European commitment to preserving Arctic stability and defending the interests of its partners.

The visit followed a diplomatic confrontation last week when Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen summoned the U.S. ambassador.

This came after a Danish public broadcaster disclosed that at least three U.S. citizens with links to President Donald Trump and the White House were allegedly orchestrating a campaign to stir division between Denmark and Greenland.
