Pope Leo demand once again immediate truce in Ukraine
(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV has called once again for an urgent ceasefire in Ukraine, appealing to global leaders to prioritize dialogue and peace as Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities intensify, according to reports.
During the Sunday Angelus in Rome, the pope emphasized: “The voice of weapons must fall silent, and the voice of fraternity and justice must prevail.” He expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people, mourning the “continual destruction and death” caused by the conflict, and urged citizens not to remain indifferent. He encouraged both prayers and “concrete actions of charity,” reinforcing his call for a ceasefire.
The pontiff stressed the responsibility of those in authority, saying: “It is time for those in power to abandon the logic of weapons and to take up the path of negotiation and peace, with the support of the international community.”
Pope Leo also remembered victims of a recent shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, noting: “We include in our prayers the countless children killed and injured every day around the world. Let us plead with God to stop the pandemic of arms, large and small, which infects our world.”
Additionally, he highlighted the tragic deaths of at least 69 people when a boat carrying irregular migrants sank off Mauritania’s coast, commenting: “This deadly tragedy is repeated every day around the world. Let us pray that the Lord may teach us, as individuals and as a society, to fully put into practice His word: ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me.’”
