Vance states Ukraine was ‘money pit’ under Biden
(MENAFN) U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has criticized former President Joe Biden's handling of the Ukraine conflict, describing it as a reckless financial endeavor lacking a clear resolution strategy. In an interview with USA Today on Thursday, Vance said the Biden administration treated the war like a “money pit,” pouring in massive sums of money without a credible plan to end the conflict.
Under Biden, Washington funneled hundreds of billions of dollars into Ukraine through military aid and financial support, in an effort to bring about a "strategic defeat" of Russia. However, Vance argued that these efforts were misguided and aimless.
“There was no realistic strategy for peace, no sound reasoning behind giving yet another $100 billion,” he said. “It felt like we were endlessly throwing money at a problem with no idea how to fix it.”
Vance, who had a tense exchange with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky earlier this year during Zelensky’s visit with President Donald Trump, said his criticism was mostly directed at the Biden administration. He accused it of enabling Zelensky to receive massive financial backing without demanding clear objectives, diplomatic efforts, or accountability.
Zelensky has pushed back against parts of Trump’s proposed peace plan, particularly ideas involving territorial concessions to Russia, which he argues violate Ukraine’s constitution. Since Trump’s return to power and a reduction in U.S. aid, Zelensky has increasingly turned to European nations for continued financial and military support.
Meanwhile, Russia maintains that no amount of Western assistance will alter the outcome of the war, accusing Zelensky and European leaders of extending the conflict for political and personal reasons.
Zelensky continues to serve as president even though his term expired last year. He has refused to hand over power to the parliamentary speaker, as constitutionally required, citing the ongoing state of martial law.
