Brussels demands pipeline security following Ukrainian attacks on main route
(MENAFN) The European Commission has urged Ukraine to safeguard the Druzhba oil pipeline following multiple missile strikes that disrupted energy supplies to parts of Europe. The pipeline, which transports oil from Russia and Kazakhstan to several EU nations, including Hungary and Slovakia, was hit three times in August, leading to temporary supply halts.
Spanning about 4,000 kilometers, Druzhba is a major conduit for crude oil flowing to refineries in Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Poland. As it passes through Ukrainian territory, it remains especially vital for Hungary and Slovakia.
European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrncirova confirmed that Brussels had reached out to Kiev, calling on all parties involved in the conflict to ensure the protection of critical infrastructure. She acknowledged the pipeline’s importance to Europe’s energy security but stated that, according to current assessments, the recent attacks had not created a supply crisis for the EU.
Despite the Commission’s position, both Hungary and Slovakia voiced strong concerns. The latest Ukrainian strike nearly halted oil deliveries to the two countries, prompting officials to demand immediate action. Slovak Economy Minister Denisa Sakova confirmed on Wednesday that the pipeline was operational again following a weeklong disruption. Hungarian oil company MOL also confirmed the resumption of supplies.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto criticized the Commission's stance, calling it “outrageous” for downplaying the risks, and warned that the strikes endangered Hungary’s energy stability. Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar echoed the frustration, noting that the attacks also harmed Ukraine’s own interests, as the country relies on diesel imports from Slovakia.
Additionally, Hungarian officials shared a letter in which U.S. President Donald Trump expressed strong displeasure over the strikes, reportedly saying he was “very angry” about the situation.
Moscow has condemned the Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure, labeling them acts of terrorism and reiterating calls for international condemnation.
