Global Sumud Flotilla Sets Sail to Gaza

(MENAFN) The International Committee to Break the Siege on Gaza announced on Saturday that the “Global Sumud Flotilla” is set to embark on its voyage starting Sunday from Barcelona, with a second departure planned for Thursday from Tunisia.

This mission aims to confront Israel’s blockade of the Palestinian territory.

In an official statement, the committee characterized the flotilla as a global demonstration opposing “the siege and genocide” occurring in Gaza.

They criticized international organizations for their “failure and complicity” in addressing the crisis.

The committee emphasized that the convoy represents “not just symbolic boats carrying aid, but a powerful humanitarian message,” symbolizing worldwide resolve to end the blockade.

According to the statement, “Every ship carries a cry of hope for Gaza and a global voice demanding an immediate end to the blockade and injustice.”

The Global Sumud Flotilla unites four separate initiatives: the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, the Global Movement to Gaza, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, and Sumud Nusantara.

Organizers explained that this campaign follows previous efforts to break the blockade, such as the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara in 2010 and this year’s voyages of the vessels Al-Dhamir, Madleen, and Handala.

Israeli naval forces intercepted the Handala aid vessel on July 26 as it approached Gaza’s coast and redirected it to Ashdod Port.

The ship had reached approximately 70 nautical miles from Gaza, exceeding the distance covered by the Madleen, which was stopped after 110 miles, the committee reported.

Since October 2023, Israel has caused the deaths of nearly 63,400 Palestinians in Gaza.

The ongoing military offensive has ravaged the region, which is now suffering from severe famine.
