Cop Injured During Protest Near Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court

(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) A policeman sustained minor injuries after being attacked during a protest near the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court, Tuesday.

A bottle was thrown from the crowd towards the policeman, hitting him on his face.

Blood was later seen dripping from his nose and he was taken away with the assistance of some journalists.

The protest was staged in support of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe when his case was being heard.

Wickremesinghe was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Friday over allegations he misused Government funds to travel to London to attend a private function.

He was accused of misusing Government funds to travel to London to attend a graduation ceremony of his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe in 2023 when he was President.

The former President was remanded till Tuesday (26/08) and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital after being transferred from the prison hospital.
