Man Arrested for Attacking Delhi Chief Minister

(MENAFN) A 41-year-old man was taken into custody on Wednesday after he attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public grievances session at her official residence, police said.

The suspect, identified as Rajesh Khimji from Gujarat, allegedly slapped the chief minister and grabbed her by the hand and hair. “The chief minister received minor injuries during the assault. It is learnt that she received a small head injury. She is being medically examined,” a Delhi Police official confirmed.

Eyewitnesses told media that Gupta was listening to citizens’ complaints when the man approached her, handed her a piece of paper, began shouting and using profanities, and then struck her.

Authorities are questioning Khimji to determine his motive. However, media reports from Gujarat cited his mother as saying he was a "dog lover," upset by the recent controversy over efforts to remove stray dogs from Delhi and surrounding regions—a move that has sparked protests nationwide.

Just one day earlier, the Delhi chief minister had firmly directed all relevant officials to avoid any harsh measures that could upset dog lovers or cause harm to stray dogs.

The attack drew widespread condemnation from leaders across the political spectrum. Gupta, affiliated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), took office in February this year.
