China Welcomes US, Russia Diplomatic Progress
(MENAFN) China expressed on Monday that it was “glad” to observe the United States and Russia enhance their bilateral relations after the meeting between President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump in Alaska.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning conveyed in Beijing that China is “glad to see continued engagement of Russia and the US to improve their ties and promote political settlement of Ukraine.”
She made these remarks while addressing questions about the first encounter between Trump and Putin in six years.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Mao affirmed that Beijing “supports” a political resolution to the ongoing war.
The closed-door meeting between Trump and Putin lasted three hours on Friday in Anchorage, Alaska, during which Putin stated that both leaders reached an "understanding."
Following the summit, Trump informed Fox News that key agreements had been made, with only minor issues left to resolve.
When asked about Trump’s upcoming discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House, Mao responded, “We expect all stakeholders will participate in peace talks for the lasting agreement accepted by all parties.”
Addressing the notion of China becoming a security guarantor for Ukraine, Mao reiterated, “Our position on Ukraine is consistent and clear. We will continue to promote political security in the Ukrainian crisis.”
