Media reports India expanding prohibition on ship-ins from bordering nation
(MENAFN) India has expanded its restrictions on imports from Bangladesh, banning certain jute products and ropes from entering via all land routes, according to the Press Trust of India. Only shipments arriving through Nhava Sheva, a western seaport nearly 1,200 miles from Bangladesh, will be allowed.
The banned items include bleached and unbleached woven jute fabrics, twine, ropes, sacks, and bags. Similar measures were introduced in June, amid ongoing trade tensions following the ouster of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
Earlier in the year, India also prohibited imports of garments, processed foods, plastics, and wood furniture from Bangladesh after Dhaka restricted Indian yarn imports via land. India had previously withdrawn a facility allowing Bangladesh to export goods to third countries through Indian land routes, citing logistical delays and higher costs. In the 2023–24 fiscal year, Bangladesh exported roughly $1.57 billion worth of goods to India, including $700 million in garments.
