AU emphasizes ways to strengthen position of indigenous communities in Africa

(MENAFN) The African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has highlighted the importance of adopting inclusive policy approaches and fair resource-sharing systems to strengthen the position of indigenous communities across Africa.

This appeal was made in a statement released on the occasion of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, observed annually on August 9. The day seeks to raise global awareness about the rights of indigenous populations and recognize their vital contributions to critical global challenges.

Youssouf emphasized the need to honor the rich cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, and resilience of indigenous groups throughout Africa and beyond. He pointed out their crucial role in safeguarding cultural diversity, conserving the environment, and advancing sustainable development, all in line with the African Union’s long-term vision outlined in Agenda 2063.

He urged AU member states, partners, and relevant stakeholders to collaborate closely by promoting inclusive policy-making, ensuring equitable distribution of resources, and respecting traditional knowledge systems.
