Iraq prevents terrorist plot by the Daesh/ISIS group
(MENAFN) Authorities in Iraq announced on Sunday that they successfully prevented a terrorist plot by the Daesh/ISIS group aimed at attacking Shia pilgrims in the city of Karbala.
According to a statement from the Karbala Investigation Court, 23 individuals, including one woman, were detained during coordinated raids conducted across southern Iraq, the Middle Euphrates region, and Baghdad.
The arrested suspects confessed to planning assaults intended to jeopardize the security of pilgrims attending the Arbaeen ceremony. This event commemorates the conclusion of a 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in battle in 680.
Each year, Karbala draws thousands of Shia pilgrims who journey on foot to participate in one of the largest religious observances within the Shia community.
