Türkiye Reports One Fatality in Balikesir Earthquake
(MENAFN) A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook Türkiye's northwestern Balikesir province on Sunday, resulting in one death and injuries to 29 individuals, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed.
During a press briefing in Balikesir, Yerlikaya stated, "81-year-old elder has passed away," confirming the sole fatality.
He emphasized that "none of the injured are in life-threatening conditions," and added that search and rescue efforts have officially ended.
The minister further revealed that 16 buildings collapsed in the province’s rural zones, with 12 of those being unoccupied structures.
The quake struck at 7:53 p.m. local time (1653 GMT), causing widespread alarm across the area. Citizens were seen evacuating buildings and assembling in open spaces as officials advised the public to avoid damaged sites.
