Russia confirms diplomats assaulted by Israeli settlers in Jerusalem
(MENAFN) Russia has confirmed that a group of its diplomats were assaulted by Israeli settlers in occupied Palestinian territory near Jerusalem.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the incident occurred on July 30 when a service vehicle bearing diplomatic license plates and transporting staff from the Russian office to the Palestinian National Administration was attacked near the illegal Israeli settlement of Giv'at Asaf. The vehicle, which included diplomats accredited by Israel’s Foreign Ministry, sustained mechanical damage and the diplomats were subjected to verbal threats.
What Russia found especially troubling was the presence of Israeli military personnel at the scene, who reportedly did nothing to stop the attack.
The ministry condemned the incident as a serious breach of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which obliges host countries to safeguard the dignity, property, and personal security of foreign diplomats.
In response, the Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv lodged a formal protest with Israeli authorities. The Foreign Ministry expressed hope that Israel would take the incident seriously and act accordingly.
