Trump Vows Higher Tariffs on India
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump declared his intention to significantly increase trade duties on India, alleging that the South Asian country is benefiting financially from re-selling oil it purchases from Russia.
"India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits," Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday.
He criticized India’s stance, saying, "They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA."
Trump did not elaborate on the specific scale or timing of this potential tariff adjustment.
His latest message builds on earlier threats directed at New Delhi concerning its ongoing energy and military cooperation with Moscow.
Trump has frequently voiced disapproval over India’s close economic engagement with Russia despite international concerns over the war in Ukraine.
According to figures from last year, oil imported from Russia made up approximately 35% to 40% of India’s overall crude purchases.
As of now, Indian officials have not publicly addressed Trump’s recent comments, as reported by a news agency.
