S. Korea intents to deepen its relations with China

(MENAFN) South Korea announced on Tuesday its intention to enhance its relationship with China while continuing to maintain a strong partnership with the United States, according to reports.

This declaration came after recent comments by Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, who described China as “somewhat problematic” for its neighboring countries.

In a statement, the South Korean presidency clarified these remarks, emphasizing, "We're seeking to develop our bilateral relations with China based on the staunch South Korea-U.S. alliance."

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, the foreign minister explained that China's increasing assertiveness has heightened concerns among nearby nations, describing it as "a problem of China becoming somewhat problematic" for its neighbors.

The presidency added that Minister Cho’s comments were made within the broader context of South Korea’s ongoing efforts to foster a relationship with China that supports regional stability, prosperity, and the well-being of its people.

Cho also highlighted that the administration under President Lee Jae Myung is committed to maintaining positive ties with Beijing, while continuing collaboration with the US and Japan to engage China rather than isolate it.
