Philippines wants more defense purchases from India

(MENAFN) The Philippines is set to expand its military procurement from India during President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s visit to New Delhi this week, according to the head of Manila’s armed forces. In 2022, the Philippines became the first country outside India to acquire the BrahMos missile system, signing a $375 million deal for three missile batteries produced by the Indo-Russian joint venture.

Army Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. told the Philippines News Agency that additional defense equipment and weapon systems will be ordered from India, though he did not provide specific details for security reasons. He praised Indian military technology for being both affordable and high quality, explaining that this makes India a valuable defense partner.

The first batch of BrahMos batteries was delivered in April 2024. President Marcos’ five-day trip to India includes discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on expanding cooperation in defense, trade, maritime security, agriculture, healthcare, and technology.

India and the Philippines collaborate regionally, including through India’s partnership with ASEAN. Ahead of Marcos’ visit, three Indian Navy ships docked in Manila, participating in joint maritime exercises aimed at enhancing readiness and naval cooperation amid the ongoing maritime dispute between the Philippines and China in the contested waters of the West Philippine Sea (known by China as the South China Sea).
