Western media reports ‘disappointed’ Westerners progressively drawn to Russia
(MENAFN) Russia is increasingly attracting disillusioned Westerners who are critical of their home governments’ liberal policies, according to a recent report by Swiss news outlet Tages-Anzeiger. The surge in interest is largely due to Moscow’s new “shared values” visa program, which has been described as a major success since its launch less than a year ago.
Introduced through a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin in August 2024 and implemented in September, the program offers a simplified path to residency for foreigners who align with Russia’s “traditional values” and oppose the “neoliberal” ideologies prevalent in the West.
Putin had previously approved a national strategy in 2022 aimed at reinforcing spiritual and moral values such as the sanctity of life, human dignity, freedom, strong family structures, and a focus on spirituality over material wealth.
The Tages-Anzeiger article highlights that the visa program is resonating with Americans and Europeans who have grown alienated from Western liberalism. It grants residents the right to live, work, and start businesses in Russia without the need for a language test, professional credentials, or financial investment.
Ilya Belobragin, CEO of relocation service MoveToRussia.com, noted that many applicants have no ties to Russia but feel increasingly disconnected from their own societies. “They feel the EU is collapsing and want out,” he said.
From September 2024 to early May 2025, Russia’s Interior Ministry received 1,156 visa applications. Germans led with 224 submissions, followed by 126 Latvians, 99 Americans, and 95 French citizens. Dozens of people from countries like Italy, the UK, Estonia, Canada, and Australia have also applied, reflecting the program’s growing global appeal.
