China approves nine rounds of lunar sample for scientific research

(MENAFN) Chinese authorities have greenlit a ninth set of lunar sample lending requests from academic institutions, allowing further scientific analysis of material collected during the Chang'e-5 and Chang'e-6 missions, according to reports.

The Lunar Exploration and Space Engineering Center, a division of the national space agency, released the latest list of approved requests. As noted, a total of 30,881.8 milligrams of moon material will be distributed among 32 research teams representing 25 institutions.

The Chang'e-6 mission made history by retrieving 1,935.3 grams of lunar soil from the Moon's far side — a feat never accomplished before. Meanwhile, the earlier Chang'e-5 mission had gathered around 1,731 grams.

Since mid-2021, eight previous batches of lunar samples have been loaned out for research. In recent weeks, Chinese scientists have published several findings based on analysis of the Chang’e-6 materials, covering areas such as lunar volcanism, ancient magnetic properties, moisture levels, and the geochemical makeup of the Moon’s mantle.
