Afghanistan's Taliban Signs Major Energy Deal

(MENAFN) Afghanistan's Taliban-led government on Saturday finalized a substantial $10 billion agreement focused on the production, delivery, and distribution of 10,000 megawatts of power.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked between the country's Ministry of Water and Energy and Azizi Energy Private Company, as per a message shared by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs on X.

According to the announcement, the initiative will lead to Afghanistan reaching full "self-sufficiency in electricity production" within "7 to 10 years," and the nation will eventually commence power exports to other countries.

The statement also emphasized that the agreement is projected to generate employment opportunities for "millions of Afghans."

This contract stands as one of the most significant undertakings since the Taliban regained control in August 2021.

Mirwais Azizi, the CEO of Azizi Energy, mentioned that the firm will employ a mix of gas, coal, hydropower, wind, and solar resources across different regions of Afghanistan to produce electricity.

The blueprint for the project is slated to be finalized within six months.

During the initial stage, power plants capable of generating between 2,000 to 3,000 megawatts will be set in motion.
