Hawaii Sees 5-Foot Tsunami Waves After Russia Quake, No Damage Reported

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, July 30 (KUNA) -- The US state of Hawaii experienced initial tsunami waves around midnight following a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake off eastern Russia, prompting warnings and evacuation orders in several countries.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green said in a press conference that waves over five feet were observed along parts of Hawaii's coastline, urging residents to remain indoors and avoid coastal roads and low-lying areas.
"We have not yet seen a major tsunami wave from the quake, and wave activity has not extended beyond the Big Island, which is a major relief," Green said, adding that no damage were reported so far.
He stated that Hawaii's authorities would maintain warnings until wave activity gradually subsides over the next three hours, at which point the threat may be declared over.
"So far, things are looking good," adding that no power outages have been reported.
Earlier, US officials issued tsunami alerts for the West Coast, particularly for California, Hawaii, Alaska, and Oregon, following the undersea quake near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
The US National Weather Service said Tuesday evening that tsunami waves could persist for 10 to 36 hours in California's coastal zones, depending on local conditions and wave patterns.
Meanwhile, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urged residents in coastal areas of Hawaii to evacuate immediately via a post on (X) (end)
