Moscow backs Africa in challenges against neocolonialism
(MENAFN) Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has voiced firm support for African political movements fighting neocolonialism. Speaking via a message to the Liberation Movements Summit in South Africa, Medvedev emphasized Russia’s dedication to fostering stronger political cooperation with African nations.
As the head of the ruling United Russia party, Medvedev praised African parties for their historical resistance to imperialism, describing them as vital forces for political stability and socio-economic advancement. He stressed that United Russia prioritizes alliances with these parties, especially in challenging neocolonial practices led by former colonial powers that still attempt to dominate African states.
Medvedev reaffirmed Russia's commitment to promoting a multipolar world based on mutual respect, national sovereignty, and equal partnership. He highlighted the longstanding relationships between United Russia and several African political groups that share similar values in global development.
On the sidelines of the summit, ANC Treasurer General Dr. Gwen Ramokgopa stated that liberation movements must now evolve to focus on “economic emancipation” and inclusive prosperity, beyond their traditional political roles.
The Liberation Movements Summit, held from July 25 to 28, brought together major political parties such as South Africa’s ANC, Mozambique’s FRELIMO, Namibia’s SWAPO, Zimbabwe’s ZANU-PF, and Tanzania’s Chama Cha Mapinduzi.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in earlier remarks, also condemned Western economic practices in Africa, labeling them as “pure neocolonialism.” He accused Western companies of exploiting African resources without reinvesting in the continent and noted a rising determination among African nations to reclaim control over their economic futures.
