China Criticizes Taiwan's DPP

(MENAFN) China strongly criticized Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Sunday, accusing it of “political manipulation” that runs “against the will of the people,” after opposition legislators managed to survive a major recall vote, according to a news agency.

The recall vote, held on Saturday, targeted members of Taiwan’s legislature from the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party.

The KMT emerged victorious, successfully retaining all 24 of its contested seats. This outcome secures continued opposition influence in the legislature, bolstered by support from Taiwan People's Party (TPP) legislators.

Responding to the vote’s outcome, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated that the DPP, driven by its aspirations for "Taiwan independence" and dominance by a single party, has consistently fueled political unrest at the expense of the public’s well-being.

Chen further contended that the DPP has employed a wide range of strategies to suppress dissent, promote a sense of "green terror," and deepen divisions within society.

He claimed this reveals the party's true identity as one of “fake democracy, real authoritarianism.”

Those facing the recall included prominent KMT lawmakers from Taipei and New Taipei, such as Hung Meng-kai, who had secured the largest number of votes in the 2024 legislative election.

Ann Kao, the suspended mayor of Hsinchu and a former member of the TPP, was also subject to the recall following her conviction in a corruption case.
