Russia downs more than 100 Ukrainian drones
(MENAFN) Russian air defenses shot down more than 100 Ukrainian drones between Friday night and Saturday morning, according to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry. Despite the interceptions, regional authorities reported damage to some residential properties.
The ministry confirmed that 94 drones were destroyed overnight, mainly over the regions of Voronezh, Bryansk, Belgorod, Saratov, and Novgorod. An additional 12 drones were brought down between 6:00 am and 8:00 am on Saturday in Bryansk, Ryazan, Oryol, and Novgorod Regions.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that two drones targeted the capital but were intercepted before reaching the city. Emergency services were deployed to the sites where debris landed.
In the Chuvash Republic, regional head Oleg Nikolaev reported two drone incidents with no casualties. One drone struck the roof of an inactive electrotechnical plant, while another hit a warehouse under construction.
Saratov Region Governor Roman Busargin reported drone damage to residential buildings in the cities of Engels and Saratov but said there were no casualties. In Voronezh Region, Governor Alexandr Gusev said more than 25 drones were neutralized by defense systems. Debris caused minor damage to power lines, a private house, and a garage, but no injuries were reported.
Ukraine has been conducting drone strikes on Russian territory for months, targeting civilian areas, infrastructure, and energy facilities. Moscow labels these attacks as acts of terrorism. On Friday, a separate Ukrainian drone strike killed an elderly woman in Rostov Region, and another damaged a power station in Sergiyev-Posad near Moscow.
