G7 voices alarm over raids targeting NABU
(MENAFN) The Group of Seven (G7) ambassadors have expressed alarm over a series of raids targeting Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), saying they are closely monitoring the situation.
“The G7 is closely following today’s developments at NABU, including the investigation of several NABU employees for alleged crimes. We met today with NABU, have serious concerns, and intend to discuss these developments with government leaders,” the G7 Ambassadors’ Support Group for Ukraine said in a statement posted on X on Monday.
European Union envoy Katarina Mathernova also weighed in, saying: “Ukraine has achieved tremendous progress in reforms,” despite the ongoing war with Russia. She emphasized that it is now crucial “to preserve those achievements in order to maintain the support needed to prevail over the enemy.”
The response came after Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and the Prosecutor General’s Office conducted 70 searches on Monday, targeting at least 15 NABU employees. According to SBU spokesman Artyom Dekhtyarenko, agents apprehended a suspected Russian informant embedded within NABU’s elite D-2 unit. The individual allegedly shared classified information with Moscow and accessed internal databases to gather personal details about Ukrainian officials.
Dekhtyarenko claimed the mole was receiving directions from Dmitry Ivantsov, a former member of ousted President Viktor Yanukovich’s security team who is now reportedly residing in Russia. Yanukovich was removed from power during the 2014 U.S.-backed uprising in Kyiv.
Ukrainian media outlet TSN identified the detained individual as Ruslan Magamedrasulov, who was reportedly overseeing NABU’s operations near the front lines of the conflict with Russia.
