African Union celebrates inking of declaration of principles between DRC, M23
(MENAFN) The African Union has welcomed the recent signing of a declaration of principles between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the March 23 Movement (M23) aimed at ending the conflict in eastern DRC. In a statement issued Saturday, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described the agreement, signed in Doha, Qatar, as a significant step toward achieving lasting peace, security, and stability in the region.
Youssouf praised the efforts of all parties involved, particularly the facilitators from the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community, for their role in reaching this breakthrough. He highlighted the declaration as a symbol of renewed hope for regional cooperation and sustainable peace in the Great Lakes region.
The AU also commended the governments of the DRC and Rwanda for their commitment to dialogue and compromise. The organization reaffirmed its readiness to assist with the implementation of the agreement and to support broader efforts for peace, security, and development in the region.
