Monsoon rains claim lives of one hundred civilians in India
(MENAFN) Severe monsoon rains in northern India have claimed more than 100 lives, according to officials speaking on Wednesday.
The Emergency Operations Center reported a total of 104 fatalities in the state of Himachal Pradesh over recent weeks, alongside at least 189 injuries and 35 people still unaccounted for. The torrential rains led to various deadly incidents, including 15 deaths from cloudbursts, eight from flash floods, and others from causes such as road mishaps and drowning.
India’s monsoon season typically begins in June and continues through September. This year’s intense downpours have not only taken a human toll but have also resulted in the deaths of at least 22,690 animals and poultry, according to the Emergency Center.
With widespread destruction across the state, local authorities are now seeking assistance from the central government. “We have demanded a special relief package for the state,” said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu following a meeting with Indian Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday.
