EU's Kallas Applauds Trump’s Tariff Threats
(MENAFN) European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has expressed approval of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent warning to impose tariffs on Russia’s economic partners unless a peace agreement is secured with Ukraine within 50 days.
Kallas described Trump’s move as a “positive” development.
Meanwhile, Moscow responded by cautioning that such remarks might be interpreted by Kiev as encouragement to sustain the ongoing conflict.
On Monday, Trump conveyed his frustration with the drawn-out peace negotiations, stating he was “very, very unhappy” with the process.
He issued a stern message to Moscow, threatening “severe” secondary tariffs—potentially reaching 100%—if meaningful progress toward a resolution was not achieved.
“It is very positive that President Trump is taking a strong stance on Russia,” said Kallas, who is recognized for her firm approach toward Moscow, during a press conference.
Nevertheless, she questioned whether Trump’s 50-day ultimatum would suffice to “pressure” the Kremlin into action.
“50 days is a very long time... It is clear that we all need to put more pressure on Russia so that they would also want peace,” Kallas remarked.
She also urged the United States to maintain its military backing for Kiev, reinforcing the need for continued international support.
