Individual attempts to impersonate Senator Marco Rubio using AI

(MENAFN) An individual attempted to deceive US and international officials by using artificial intelligence to impersonate Senator Marco Rubio, according to reports citing internal State Department communications.

The impersonator sent voice and text messages generated by AI, mimicking Rubio’s speech and writing style. Targets included at least three foreign ministers, a US senator, and a state governor. The false messages were delivered via the encrypted app Signal, using a fraudulent email address appearing as “[...](mailto:...).” These communications reportedly began in mid-June.

A US official described the messages as “not very sophisticated” and said the attempts ultimately failed. The State Department, in a memo circulated to embassies, noted that while there is no immediate cyber threat, information shared with third parties might be exposed if those targeted are compromised.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce confirmed the incident on Tuesday, stating the department is “currently monitoring and addressing the matter.” She emphasized the agency’s commitment to protecting sensitive information and strengthening cybersecurity to prevent future occurrences.

Earlier, in May, the FBI issued a warning about malicious actors using AI-generated voice messages to impersonate high-ranking US officials. The alert came after a phone associated with the White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles was hacked, leading to fake calls and messages being sent to her contacts.
