Kenya’s record thirty-one deaths due to anti-government protests

(MENAFN) The number of fatalities linked to anti-government protests across Kenya on July 7 has climbed to 31, marking the deadliest day since the demonstrations began earlier this year, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). The independent human rights body is actively monitoring ongoing incidents connected to the nationwide protests, which call for President William Ruto’s resignation, demand accountability for police violence, and seek urgent economic reforms.

In its most recent report, the KNCHR detailed that alongside the fatalities, there have been 107 reported injuries, 532 arrests, and two cases of enforced disappearances. It also noted significant but unmeasured damage to property during the unrest.

Raymond Nyeris, vice chairperson of the commission, condemned all violations of human rights and urged all parties involved—including police officers, civilians, and other stakeholders—to be held accountable. He extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and called for immediate medical aid for the injured.

The protests erupted nationwide to mark the anniversary of the 1990 Saba Saba uprising, spreading through major cities such as Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Nakuru.
