Doha: In a joint initiative aimed at preserving Qatar's marine ecosystem, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, represented by the Department of Marine Protection, has launched an environmental awareness and inspection campaign at Al Wakra Port.

The effort was carried out in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries Resources at the Ministry of Municipality.

The campaign focused on raising awareness among fishermen about the environmental hazards posed by the improper disposal of plastic bags, particularly those used to store bread during fishing trips.

Such waste poses a serious threat to marine life and ecosystems when discarded into the sea.

As part of the campaign, environmentally friendly and reusable bags were distributed to fishermen as a sustainable alternative.

Officials also took the opportunity to educate the fishing community about existing environmental laws and regulations in the country, reinforcing the importance of compliance to protect marine biodiversity.

In addition to awareness activities, the campaign included on-site inspections.

Authorities recorded several violations, including the use of prohibited fishing gear.

Legal actions were taken against those found in breach of the regulations.
