Türkiye’s First Nuclear Power Plant Begins Commissioning

(MENAFN) The commissioning phase has started for the initial unit of Türkiye's inaugural nuclear power station, according to the project's leading official who spoke to a news agency on Tuesday.

"Despite some challenges, everything is progressing according to schedule," stated Anton Dedusenko, chairman of the board at the Akkuyu Nuclear Joint Stock Company, during the 11th Nuclear Power Plants Summit held in Istanbul.

Dedusenko, who also serves as the CEO of Rusatom Energy International, mentioned, "We plan to carry out preparatory work this year to connect the first unit's switchyard to the electrical transmission system."

He revealed that the overall construction of the 1,200-megawatt Unit 1 has been finalized, and trial operations are currently in progress.

He described the startup phase as "a very important period for a nuclear power unit."

The executive highlighted the crucial role the Akkuyu plant will have in supporting Türkiye's goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2053, emphasizing that the plant will contribute to reducing the nation’s carbon footprint by 20 percent.

"This is a very significant contribution," Dedusenko concluded.
