Massive Wildfire Ravages Greek Island of Crete

(MENAFN) A massive wildfire in eastern Crete continues to intensify, with over 1,500 residents and tourists evacuated, local media reported Thursday. Despite ongoing firefighting efforts, the blaze remains uncontrollable.

The fire ignited in the Lasithi region near the city of Ierapetra early on Wednesday, and has since expanded, now burning across three fronts. Strong winds are exacerbating the situation, making containment efforts even more challenging, according to media.

Ioannis Androulakis, deputy governor of Lasithi, spoke to media about the crisis, noting that the situation is rapidly worsening.

“We don’t know how many houses in the area have been burned so far,” Androulakis explained. He also mentioned that the fire has caused widespread power outages and disrupted mobile communication signals.
