Large portion of US citizens predict major crisis folding
(MENAFN) A recent YouGov survey reveals that a large portion of American adults expect the United States to face major crises in the coming decade, potentially losing its standing as a global superpower.
Among 1,111 adults surveyed online in mid-June, 21% said it is very likely that the US will decline in global influence within the next ten years, while another 24% viewed this outcome as somewhat likely.
In total, 45% of respondents considered a full economic collapse of the US at least somewhat possible. Additionally, 40% anticipated a civil war, and an equal share believed there might be a total breakdown of law and order.
Almost 38% said they think the US might no longer be a democracy in ten years. Meanwhile, 31% feared the country could become a fascist dictatorship, and 20% predicted a communist dictatorship.
Only 43% of those surveyed felt that the current US political system works at least somewhat well, with stark partisan differences: 69% of Republicans, 36% of independents, and just 26% of Democrats held this view.
Most Americans, regardless of political leanings, said they believe they currently live in a democracy. However, 56% agreed the country is undergoing a constitutional crisis, a view shared by 82% of Democrats but only 26% of Republicans.
Concerns about global affairs also varied: 47% of Democrats said they are very worried about the world’s direction, compared to 10% of Republicans and 30% of independents.
Compared to ten years ago, 67% of participants said they have observed more political violence and misinformation in the US, with at least half thinking these problems are worse domestically than in other democracies.
