(MENAFN) On Tuesday, the Sudanese military reported successfully intercepting a drone assault launched by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a strategic air base located in northern Sudan. According to a statement from the armed forces, their air defense systems were able to destroy multiple suicide drones that had been aimed at Merowe Air Base, situated in Sudan's Northern State.

The RSF has not yet responded to the army’s claims regarding the thwarted attack.

The ongoing conflict between Sudan’s military and the RSF, which began in mid-April 2023, has spiraled into a full-scale war, resulting in an overwhelming humanitarian crisis. The UN and local authorities have confirmed over 20,000 fatalities and 14 million displaced people as of the latest reports. However, independent research conducted by several US universities suggests that the actual death toll may be closer to 130,000, reflecting the severe scale of the violence.

This incident underscores the mounting tensions between the two factions, with the fight intensifying despite repeated efforts at ceasefire.
