N. Korea Launches Sprawling Kalma Beach Resort
(MENAFN) North Korea has launched a sprawling beach resort along the eastern coastline in Kalma, with leader Kim Jong Un praising the development as one of this year’s "greatest" achievements, according to state media reports on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Kim officially inaugurated the newly completed Kalma coastal tourist zone, which stretches over four kilometers, media detailed.
Starting July 1, the resort will open its doors to domestic visitors.
This extensive tourist complex includes residential buildings, hotels, and hostels designed to accommodate close to 20,000 guests, welcoming both locals and foreigners.
Visitors will have access to a variety of amenities such as seaside swimming areas, sports facilities, leisure spots, alongside commercial outlets and public dining services.
Kim emphasized the resort’s importance, stating, "The Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area should play a leading role in establishing the tourist culture of" North Korea, labeling the project as a foundational move toward advancing cultural tourism nationwide.
Joining Kim at the ribbon-cutting were his daughter, Ju-ae, and his wife, Ri Sol-ju. This marked Ri’s first public appearance since she was last seen at a New Year's Day arts event on January 1, 2024.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Alexander Matsegora, the Russian ambassador to North Korea.
Earlier this year, in February, North Korea reopened the border city of Rason to Western tourists for the first time in five years after shutting it down during the COVID-19 pandemic peak in 2020.
